Electives
Each quarter Legal Studies approves courses taught throughout the University as electives that will count towards the major and minor requirements.
See below for the list of approved classes for the current academic year.
Elective Lists
- Legal Studies Approved Electives, 2015-2021 (last updated 3/4/21)
This is a list of approved electives from the past several academic years that you can filter by department, course number, or quarter offered.
- Legal Studies Approved Electives by Academic Year 2015-2021 (last updated 3/4/21)
This is a list of approved electives going back to 2015; the tabs at the bottom will allow you to view our approved courses by each academic year. - Chicago Field Studies Courses
They aren't included on our lists, but students can receive two Legal Studies credits for the following Chicago Field Studies courses:
- CFS 391 - Field Studies in Social Justice
- CFS 394 - Legal Field Studies
- CFS 397 - Field Studies in Civic Engagement
All other CFS courses may count as one Legal Studies credit.
Students may count a maximum of two CFS credits towards their Legal Studies requirements.
Being listed as an approved Legal Studies elective does not come with enrollment permissions for Legal Studies students. Some department's courses have prerequisites or are closed to non-majors. CAESAR will detail any such restrictions.
Elective Petition
If you believe that a class not included in our lists has sufficient legal content and should be considered as a Legal Studies elective, please complete the petition for elective credit. Once submitted, the petition will undergo review by the Director of Undergraduate Studies. Petitions should be submitted during the quarter the student is enrolled in the course and are considered on a case-by-case basis.
- Study Abroad and Transfer Credits
Students transferring from other universities, or those returning from study abroad, may petition courses with significant legal content to count towards legal studies major or minor requirements. Follow the rules for articulating your study abroad courses or your transfer credits. Once those credits are approved by Northwestern, submit a petition for legal studies elective credit. If we approve, we will be happy to sign off on the Weinberg transfer credit forms. Read more about Study Abroad here.
Elective Courses
Note that courses are subject to change.
The list for the next upcoming quarter will be updated during the week of pre-registration.
